Nature
PNSAC - Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros
Consists of Serra de Aire e Candeeiros and the Plateau de Stº António, here a variety of rare formations of corsics is found: Polje, cliffs, fields of lapis and dry valleys.
The main points of access are found in the Salinas area of Rio Maior, the Caves de Stº António, Alvados, Moeda and Mira de Aire caves, and the deposit of paleontological footprints of dinosaurs, the "Pedreira do Galinha". It is ideal for espeleology exploration on its many limestone caves
Leiria Pine tree forest
Forest of pine trees were first planted by Afonso III, in the thirteenth century and intensified later in the reign of D. Dinis - the king Lavrador. It served as the barrier against the advance of sand dunes over the fertile lands of Liz river. Today, Pinhal de Leiria is an ideal place for leisure and nature lovers with tenths of kilometres of walk and cycle paths stretching over large unspoiled beached.

Sun and Sea
The region has a number of picturesque beaches some more cosmopolitan, others with more tradition.
Praia do Pedrógão, Praia da Vieira, reflecting the ancient art of typical fishing boats, or women costumes.
Boards and sails full of sea breeze, and drops of water and the sun rays fulfil the beauty of these beaches.
S. Pedro gizzard of a sheltered shell of houses full of good taste and aristocratic air where the surf here is practiced throughout the year.
Nazare, the most typical beach in Portugal, near the imposing promontory Site.
The beach marked by extensive sand confined in the fishing port, is in practical effect a huge sidewalk
where people walk in intimate contact with the sea and the locals.
In hot days the ancient works of art xávega, with the master to call the company.
Already in the municipality of Alcobaça is S. Martinho do Porto, a perfect beach along a stunning bay
in the form of shell with blue and calm waters, perfect for water sports and for children.
Monumental heritage
Monastery of Batalha
The Monastery of Stª Maria da Vitória was built due to a vow made by D. João I to the Virgin of Aljubarrota in case he win the battle against the Spanish. Elected by UNESCO as World Heritage is the greates monument of the Portuguese Gothic and the first where the "art Manueline" was debuted. The construction begins in the year 1388.
Mestre Afonso Domingues drew the first plan: Church, Cloister, Chapter of the room, the workshops and the dependencies including the conventual architecture in the model followed by the mendicant orders (Franciscans and Dominicans). It has a Latin cross in plan, three aisles and head with presbytery and four side. To refer the vaults of the Chapel of the Founder, and the Pantheon of D. Duarte (Capelas imperfect) in the Gothic flamboyant decoration.
Monastery of Alcobaça
The Abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, founded in 1178 by the Cistercian Order, it is also a World Heritage Site. The central nave of the church impresses the visitor with the depth and height of the vaults of warheads. In the side chapels of the transept are the tombs of D. Pedro I and D. Inês de Castro, magnificent buildings of medieval tomb sculpture.
The Cloister, the work of the reign of Dinis evades austere decor and the top floor of the reign of work Manuel has arms and slaughtered human capital with offices and plant. The dependencies of the monastery are situated around the Cloister: the Chapter Room of the Monks of room, the kitchen of the eighteenth century and Dining. Rich tile panels can be seen in Hall of Kings, and of clay statues of Portuguese kings.
Castle of Leiria
The Castle of Leiria, was the scene of some of the events in Portuguese history. The beginning of its construction date of the XII century, and during its construction, the castle passed through many kingdoms, and suffered the intervention of different kings. After various battles, from the fighting with Muslims to the French invasion, the monument was partially destroyed. A visit to the Castle is like a trip to the history of Portugal. The Keep tower was recently transformed into a Museum.
Castle of Ourém
It consists of three towers, with a courtyard in the center with a huge ogival tank, fed by a water source. The south side is the palace of Count D. Afonso, who gave the military structure, a section Palace. North of the Castle is the broad Terreiro of S. James, which has at its center the statue of D. Nuno Alvares Pereira. To the south, toward the castle, brings up the Palace of Count D. Afonso, followed by two imposing towers. Both the palace and the towers, are examples of unusual architecture, inspired by Venetian, which combines the function Palace and military.
Castle of Porto de Mós
The Castle of Porto de Mós, can be seen from long distance due to its characteristic towers, big and green. The castle originally had five towers, the five angles , taking as its first mayor, the legendary knight D. Fuas Roupinho, who left here to fight against the Moors. After spending several years being damaged by Arabs, in the reign of Sancho I, it was rebuilt, and begins to gain housing traits. From 1930 the castle begins to be restored, is today one of the most peculiar of the country.
Religious Heritage
Shrine of Fátima
Built in 1928 with limestone from the region, is formed by the Basilica and side wings. It is the "Altar of the World." Today the shrine of Fatima in pilgrimage and prayer welcomes many thousands of believers from around the world, especially in the annual pilgrimage on May 13 and the remaining 13 days of each month from May to October.
The center of activity is beyond the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Basilica measures 70.50 meters long and 37 wide. Has 15 altars celebrating the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary. Also in the precincts of the shrine you can see the large holm oak, under which the Shepherds and the first pilgrims waited and prayed the Rosary before reaching Our Lady, the monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which stands in the center of the square, the cross high South at the top of the enclosure.
Shrine of Our Lady of Nazaré
The site of Nazareth is, there are already many years, much sought by pilgrims, who will see the site where the miracle happened with D. Fuas Roupinho that, about to fall out of the cliff relied on Our Lady of Nazareth.
Today is a magnificent monument, with two tall towers, which highlights, inside the main altar consists of a painting of gilt, Salomon and applications with columns of marble. At the mouth of the gallery is a large painting depicting the miracle of the appearance of Ms N. of Nazareth to D. Fuas Roupinho. The pilgrimage that has always been to this temple has given him a filling of vacancies in value, that they would be sacked at the time of the French invasion.
Eating
Portugal has lots of hidden treasures. Gastronomy is one the greatest. If you are looking for very good food, either exquisite or traditional, at ridiculus cheap prices, than Leiria is place to go. You can find ery good restaurants where you can eat (and drink) as much as you want, less than 8 euros. Near the sea you can find a large variety of fresh fish, not counting the hundreds of different recipes of Cod Fish (Bacalhau).
